NTPC 244 GW Target: Company Raises Capacity Goal for 2037

NTPC 244 GW target is set to reshape the power major’s long-term growth strategy as the company plans to reach 244 GW of operational capacity by 2037. NTPC also plans cumulative capital expenditure of Rs 16.86 lakh crore by FY37 across thermal, hydro, renewables, storage, mining and nuclear power.

NTPC 244 GW Target Builds on 149 GW Goal by 2032

NTPC Chairman Gurdeep Singh said the company has raised its long-term capacity ambitions. NTPC now targets 149 GW of generation capacity by 2032, including 60 GW of renewable energy. The company currently has around 91 GW of capacity. The 244 GW target for 2037 excludes storage.

India’s electricity demand is expected to continue rising as the economy grows and living standards improve. NTPC plans to expand its generation portfolio to meet this growing requirement while adapting to changes in the country’s power mix.

NTPC 244 GW Target Supported by Rs 16.86 Lakh Crore Investment

NTPC plans to invest around Rs 16.86 lakh crore by FY37. The planned investment will cover thermal power, hydro and pumped storage, renewable energy, battery storage, mining and nuclear projects. The company expects this to be one of the largest investment programmes undertaken by an Indian power utility.

NTPC is also expanding its presence across the wider energy value chain. The strategy goes beyond adding generation capacity and focuses on building capabilities across multiple energy segments.

Nuclear Power Gains Importance in NTPC Growth Strategy

Nuclear energy is emerging as a key growth area for NTPC. The company aims to account for 30% of the government’s proposed 100 GW nuclear capacity by 2047 under the Nuclear Energy Mission.

NTPC is developing a 2.8 GW nuclear project in Rajasthan through a joint venture with NPCIL. The company is also progressing with studies and discussions for nuclear projects across 34 additional sites in 13 states.

NTPC Advances Coal Gasification Project

NTPC is also progressing with its coal gasification-based Synthetic Natural Gas project. The project will have a capacity of 5.75 lakh tonnes per annum. Once operational, it is expected to be the first project of its kind in India and could help replace imported natural gas.

NTPC Reports Record FY26 Profit

NTPC Group reported its highest-ever consolidated Profit After Tax of Rs 27,546 crore in FY26, up 15% from the previous year. Group EBITDA increased to Rs 60,564 crore, while the group’s net worth reached around Rs 2.03 lakh crore.

The NTPC 244 GW target, backed by large-scale investment across conventional and clean energy, reflects the company’s plans to expand its role in India’s evolving energy sector.
