Overloaded automobiles will be subject to a new toll structure beginning of 2026, according to the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Fourth Amendment Rules, 2026 announced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
The new regulations are set to be implemented on April 15, 2026, with the goals of enhancing safety on the road, protecting highway infrastructure, and increasing compliance. Tolls will now be based on the amount of excess weight that automobiles carry, according the revised Rule 10. According to the government, the new system will make fee collecting more equitable and sensible while discouraging overloading. At the toll plazas, accredited weight measurement instruments will be put in place to detect overloading.
Unless concessionaires consent to use the updated framework, the new regulations will not immediately apply to specific private investment highway projects that were commissioned previously. To further clarify the calculation of overload costs, the notice provides specific instances for stakeholders to review.
