NLC India Turns Mining Waste into M-Sand

NLC India Limited (NLCIL), a Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Coal, has commenced the first-ever commercial sale of Manufactured Sand (M-Sand) produced from overburden soil at Neyveli Mine-I. The sale was flagged off on 7 October 2026 at the M-Sand Plant area of Mine-I, Neyveli.

The initiative marks a step forward in NLCIL’s efforts to improve resource utilisation and promote sustainable mining practices. By processing overburden soil generated during mining operations, the company is converting a mining by-product into a value-added construction material.

NLC India Promotes Waste-to-Wealth

The M-Sand initiative forms part of NLC India’s “Waste to Wealth” approach and supports the principles of circular resource utilisation. The initiative aims to make productive use of mining overburden while reducing waste generated through mining activities.

The M-Sand produced by NLCIL is BIS-certified and has been approved by the Tamil Nadu Public Works Department (PWD) for construction activities. The certification and approval confirm that the product meets the prescribed quality requirements for its intended applications.

The initiative also aligns with Special Campaign 6.0, the Government of India’s nationwide campaign focused on Swachhata, innovative resource management and waste reduction.

M-Sand Produced from Neyveli Mine-I Overburden

The commercialisation of M-Sand provides a productive use for overburden soil generated at Neyveli Mine-I. Instead of treating the material solely as mining waste, NLCIL is processing it into a certified construction material.

The move strengthens the company’s focus on resource efficiency and supports its broader efforts towards sustainable mining and circular economy practices.

NLC India Flags Off Commercial Sale

The commercial sale was formally flagged off by Samir Swarup, Director (HR) and Director (Mines) – Additional Charge, NLCIL. Senior officials including I. S. Jasper Rose, Executive Director (Mines); N. Kumar, Unit Head, Mine-I; and N. Arivazhagan, General Manager (Marketing & SDC), were present on the occasion.

With the commencement of commercial M-Sand sales, NLC India is creating a new use for mining overburden while adding value to an existing resource. The initiative reinforces the company’s focus on waste reduction, sustainable mining and circular resource utilisation.
