NHPC Powers Ahead with 250 MW Third Unit at Subansiri Lower Project

In order to enhance India’s clean energy capacity and grid stability, NHPC Limited has started commercial operations of a 250 MW unit at its 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project.

With the third unit of the project being live on March 20, 2026, the total operational capacity reaches 750 MW, down from the intended 2,000 MW. Arunachal Pradesh and Assam are the sites of the project.

Key to the project’s tiered development, the commissioning comes after testing runs were successfully completed on February 27, 2026. We anticipate that increasing the capacity of hydropower will help with peak power demand, make the grid more reliable, and make it easier to incorporate renewable energy sources into the national grid.

The chairman and managing director of NHPC, Bhupender Gupta, expressed gratitude to the state governments and the Ministry of Power for their support. He also complimented the project team, headed by Rajendra Prasad, for its flawless execution.

He stated that the achievement demonstrates the technical competence and project management skills of NHPC, which will help to further the goal of a sustainable and independent power sector in India and increase the country’s energy security.

With this development, the project will be able to commission the remaining units on schedule, which will increase the project’s contribution to India’s expanding portfolio of sustainable energy, according to the business.
