On the night between January 31 and February 1, 2026, the 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydro-Electric (HE) Project, which spans Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, was successfully completed by NHPC Limited, a Navratna PSU under the Ministry of Power, Government of India. The energy transition, grid stability, and energy security of India have all been greatly enhanced by these accomplishments.
Third Unit synchronisation with the National Grid at 21:00 hours on January 31, 2026, was the first milestone. Unit #1 had 250 MW. Unit #3, which had a capacity of 250 MW, was the second unit to be successfully put into commercial service at midnight on February 1, 2026. The Subansiri Lower HE Project has strengthened hydropower’s role in grid stability, renewable energy integration, and peak power support with the operationalisation of these two units, which bring the overall capacity of the project to 2000 MW. The National Grid has received 500 MW of this contribution.
The chief executive officer of NHPC, Bhupender Gupta, thanked the governments of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam as well as the Ministry of Power. The successful commissioning demonstrated NHPC’s technical expertise and its vital contribution to India’s sustainable and self-reliant power sector, which he praised. He also acknowledged the dedicated efforts of the Subansiri Project team, led by Rajendra Prasad, Executive Director, and all officials at NHPC’s Corporate Office. These accomplishments will contribute to the early commissioning of the remaining units, Gupta emphasised. The NHPC workers at the site and corporate office were congratulated by Sanjay Kumar Singh, Director (Projects), for their relentless devotion. The assistance of local stakeholders, executing agencies (such as GE Vernova, BGS-SGS-SOMA, TREL, and PEL), and NHPC management and corporate teams was also recognised by Rajendra Prasad.
An example of India’s commitment to increasing its hydropower capacity, bolstering its clean energy targets, and strengthening its grid to support its burgeoning economy is the Subansiri Lower HE Project.
