An important step toward better infrastructure and connectivity in northern India will be taken today when Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates the Delhi Dehradun Economic Corridor.
He will visit Saharanpur to examine a wildlife corridor before the opening, bringing attention to the project’s emphasis on environmental sustainability. Before making his way to Dehradun for the main event, he would visit the Jai Maa Daat Kali Temple to offer prayers.
Connecting Delhi to Dehradun, the 213-km, six-lane access-controlled corridor passed through Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand and was constructed at a cost over ₹12,000 crore. When fully functional, it will significantly reduce travel time—from more than six hours to approximately 2.5 hours. Its emphasis on environmental protection is a major selling point. With animal passages, elephant underpasses, and a tunnel close to the Daat Kali temple, the project incorporates a 12-kilometer elevated wildlife corridor—one of the longest in Asia—to guarantee minimal interference with the movement of wildlife.
By balancing development with environmental conservation, this corridor is anticipated to greatly enhance tourism, trade, and regional economic growth.
