Mizoram Ginger Mission Launched to Strengthen Agriculture and Rural Income

The ₹189.79 crore Mizoram Ginger Mission, spearheaded by Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Minister of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), is an initiative that will integrate the value chain, process the ginger, and promote growth through exports. Its goal is to revolutionise the ginger sector in the state.

Geographical Indication (GI)-certified Mizo ginger, which has a high oleoresin content of 6-8%, which is much higher than the global average, is currently not producing enough money for farmers, and this is where the program is aiming to fix the structural inefficiencies in the supply chain. The farmgate price range is still around ₹8–15 per kg, even though the value downstream can go beyond ₹500 per kg, due to the strong demand on an international level.

Scindia framed the effort as a “Mizo Ginger Movement” and revealed a four-pronged plan that centers on merging schemes, adding value, branding, and integrating into markets. Improved price realisation is the goal of the mission, which calls for a reduction in intermediary layers and the strengthening of farmer collectives like FPOs and cooperatives.

To improve the long-term viability of farmers’ incomes, the program aims to include them in all stages of the agricultural value chain, from production to processing, branding, packaging, and exports, in line with Narendra Modi’s vision.

More than thirty specific interventions will be put in place as part of the mission’s integrated infrastructure network, which will consist of a central processing hub and three spoke centers. The goal is to bring about 20,000 farming households that aren’t already part of an ecosystem that is traceable, quality-assured, and built to compete on a global scale.

The government has singled out important foreign markets in Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia to highlight export potential. In the long run, we want to make Mizo ginger a premium global product that can be tracked all the way back to the farmers who grow it.

The initiative was hailed by Lalduhoma as a watershed moment in the agricultural revolution taking place in the state. He stressed that the program offers a structured way for value addition and access to global markets by capitalising on Mizoram’s strengths in high-quality, pharma-grade ginger.

The enterprise is spearheaded by the North Eastern Region Ministry of Development and incorporates backing from important organisations like the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, and the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, in addition to private sector involvement.

This initiative is part of the larger “Brand North East” plan, which aims to give each state a distinct agricultural identity. Its goals include reducing post-harvest losses, building a strong processing ecosystem focused on exports, and increasing farmer value realisation by a factor of six.

As a whole, the Mizoram Ginger Mission is indicative of a change in focus toward formalising the supply chain, increasing rural income via connections to global markets, and high-value agriculture.
