Mega Green Push: CCEA Clears ₹26,069 Cr Kamala Hydro Project

The 1,720 MW Kamala Hydroelectric Project in Arunachal Pradesh, with a completion timeframe of 96 months, has received approval for an investment of ₹26,069.5 crore from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), which is chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Government officials from Arunachal Pradesh and the National Hydropower Project Company (NHPC) will work together in a joint venture to carry out the project. In addition to helping to moderate floods in the Brahmaputra basin, its anticipated 6,870 million yearly units of clean energy generation will increase regional power supply, aid in peak demand management, and improve grid stability on a national scale.

A total of 4,743.98 crore rupees would be allocated by the central government to flood mitigation, 1,340 crore rupees to enabling infrastructure, and 750 crore rupees as Central Financial Assistance to cover the state’s equity obligation.

The permission, according to NHPC CMD Bhupender Gupta, “underlines India’s focus on clean energy expansion.” Gupta also said that the project will help with energy security, infrastructural development, and creating jobs in the area.

An extra 1% will go toward L.A. development, while Arunachal Pradesh would get 12% free electricity. Better community infrastructure and connection are two more ways the project is anticipated to boost the economy and society.

At the same time as Subansiri Lower (2,000 MW), Dibang Multipurpose (2,880 MW), and Etalin (3,097 MW), NHPC is building other large hydropower projects in the area.
