Kavach Comes to Prayagraj–Kanpur: Indian Railways Takes a Giant Leap in Safety and Speed

Imagine a train hurtling down the tracks at 160 kmph. Now imagine a system that watches every signal, monitors every movement, and—if something goes wrong—automatically applies the brakes before a disaster can happen. That’s exactly what Kavach does.

Indian Railways has commissioned its indigenous Automatic Train Protection system on the Prayagraj–Kanpur section of the busy Delhi–Howrah corridor. Covering 190 route kilometres, this rollout marks a significant milestone in the national transporter’s journey toward safer, faster, and more efficient rail travel.

The system was activated using Train No. 14163, with senior officials conducting a footplate inspection between Subedarganj and Manauri to ensure everything was in place.

So what makes Kavach special? Designed and developed under the Make in India programme, it acts as a silent guardian. It continuously monitors speed and signalling conditions. If a driver inadvertently passes a signal at danger, Kavach steps in—automatically applying the brakes and preventing potential collisions caused by human error.

In this initial phase, the system will be operational on eight pairs of trains, including the Chauri Chaura Express. Over the coming months, more services—including the Vande Bharat Express—will be brought under its protective umbrella.

The deployment follows extensive trials. Test runs were conducted with WAP-7 locomotives, LHB coaches, and even a 20-coach Vande Bharat rake. Passenger trials covering over 20,000 kilometres were completed without a single issue—proof that the system is ready for prime time.

Kavach Version 4.0 has already been deployed across more than 1,450 route kilometres, including sections of the Delhi–Mumbai and Delhi–Howrah corridors. Next up: the Ghaziabad–Tundla section, under the ambitious Mission Raftaar.

For the millions who travel on Indian Railways every day, this isn’t just about technology. It’s about reaching home safely. And at 160 kmph, that peace of mind matters more than ever.
