OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Thursday described India as one of the company’s fastest-growing markets globally, pointing to the country’s rapid embrace of Artificial Intelligence and its expanding community of AI users.
Speaking on the sidelines of the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, Altman shared that India presents a massive growth opportunity for OpenAI, it will also help in bringing advanced AI tools to education, enterprises, and developers.
“This is one of our fastest-growing markets in the world — possibly the fastest at this point. It is certainly the fastest for Codex,” Altman revealed, highlighting strong demand for OpenAI’s developer-focused offerings.
He announced that India now accounts for over 100 million weekly users of ChatGPT, including students, educators, software developers, and entrepreneurs. The massive adoption, he noted, cements India’s rising influence in the global AI landscape.
Altman also unveiled the “OpenAI for India” initiative, focused on building local AI infrastructure, strengthening skill development, and developing strategic partnerships to drive AI innovation tailored to India’s unique needs.
