Indian ports are exploring digitalisation measures with the Port of Rotterdam to accelerate cargo evacuation and reduce ship turnaround times, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Sunday. He highlighted the need to expand port capacity and modernise operations to support India’s economic growth and rising international trade.
Indian Ports Explore Digitalisation with Rotterdam
During his visit to the Port of Rotterdam, Goyal met its CEO, Boudewijn Siemons, and discussed opportunities to improve port operations through digital technology.
He said Indian customs authorities and Rotterdam port officials were examining ways to introduce modern digital standards in India. The proposed measures aim to speed up cargo movement and reduce the time ships spend at ports.
Rotterdam is Europe’s largest port and serves as a major gateway for Indian goods entering European markets. Its logistics infrastructure and international connectivity make it an important partner for strengthening India-Europe trade links.
Ports Capacity Expansion Remains a Priority
Goyal said India had doubled its port capacity over the past decade but would need further expansion to meet future demand.
He projected that India’s port capacity would double twice over the next two decades leading up to 2047. The expansion would support economic growth, international commerce and rising cargo volumes.
Improved port infrastructure and faster cargo handling will be important to managing future trade flows and strengthening the efficiency of India’s logistics network.
India-EU Trade Pact to Create New Opportunities
Goyal said the India-EU Free Trade Agreement would create significant opportunities for businesses on both sides.
The Netherlands could play an important role in facilitating trade growth through its ports, logistics facilities and connectivity with European markets. Stronger links between Indian ports and European trade hubs could also support supply chains and improve access for Indian exporters.
Goyal Calls on Indian Professionals to Mentor Start-ups
Addressing the Indian community in Amsterdam, Goyal urged professionals and academicians to collaborate with Indian institutions and mentor start-ups.
He also stressed the importance of youth engagement and responsible citizenship. Referring to concerns about negativity among young people in parts of the world, he said young people should act responsibly and recognise their obligations to the countries where they work and build their lives.
The minister’s visit highlighted opportunities for India and the Netherlands to strengthen maritime cooperation, improve port efficiency and expand trade ties in the context of the India-EU trade agreement.
