India-Germany trade and investment ties are set for further discussion as both countries explore opportunities arising from the proposed India–EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Katherina Reiche in Berlin to discuss industrial cooperation, business partnerships, technology and resilient supply chains.
India-Germany Trade Gains Momentum Through Business Dialogue
Goyal and Reiche jointly inaugurated the India Centre at the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) in Berlin. The centre aims to strengthen policy research and dialogue on India–Germany relations. It will support engagement among policymakers, researchers and other stakeholders from both countries.
The ministers also co-chaired an India–Germany Business Roundtable organised with DGAP and the Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business (APA). German chief executives and business leaders discussed ways to strengthen economic ties and translate the proposed India–EU FTA into trade and investment opportunities.
The discussions focused on industrial partnerships and areas where businesses could benefit from closer economic cooperation.
India and Germany Explore Investment Opportunities
Goyal also participated in a Berlin Global Dialogue panel titled “New Era, New Alliances: The Third Path?” The panel included Martin Blessing, the German Chancellor’s Personal Representative for Investment; Dr Tan See Leng, Singapore’s Minister for Manpower and Minister-in-charge of Energy and Science and Technology; and Emma Marcegaglia, Chairwoman and CEO of Marcegaglia Steel.
During the discussion, Goyal highlighted the importance of trust, complementary economic strengths and resilient supply chains in international partnerships.
Around 100 Indian businesses and startups accompanied Goyal during his visit to Germany and the Netherlands. Their participation provided an opportunity to engage with international business leaders and explore potential partnerships.
India-Germany Trade: Outlook for Businesses
The latest engagements reflect both countries’ interest in expanding trade, investment and industrial cooperation. The proposed India–EU FTA could create further opportunities for businesses, depending on its final terms and implementation.
Continued dialogue between governments and industry stakeholders will remain important in advancing cooperation across trade, investment, technology and manufacturing. These discussions could help businesses identify areas for collaboration and strengthen commercial ties between India and Germany.
