India Bolsters Energy Security with Strong Coal Stockpiles

As world tensions in West Asia continue to cast a shadow over electricity generation, the Indian government has reassured the public that there is more than enough coal to meet the country’s demands.

The government has ordered producers to maintain constant supply levels, and there is now enough coal at the mines, according to Sanjeev Kumar Kassi, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Coal, who made the statement at an inter-ministerial briefing.

Despite increasing input prices, coal producers should guarantee uninterrupted availability. Coal India Limited and Singareni Collieries Company Limited are taking a cost-cutting stance to ensure that consumers don’t have to pay more than they have to.

In March, Coal India Limited ramped up the frequency of its online auctions, making coal more accessible and facilitating a more consistent supply for customers in all industries.

Coal gasification, according to G. Kishan Reddy, India’s Union Minister for Coal and Mines, is a game-changing technology that can increase the country’s energy independence and decrease its reliance on foreign power generation.

A more sustainable and efficient use of domestic resources can be achieved through coal gasification, which turns coal into syngas. This gas can then be used to make cleaner fuels, fertilisers, chemicals, and hydrogen, among other things. With the goal of reaching 100 million metric tonnes of coal gasified by 2030, the government has initiated the National Coal Gasification Mission to hasten its adoption. A framework offering incentives worth ₹8,500 crore has been put in place to encourage involvement from both the public and commercial sectors.

Investments surpassing ₹64,000 crore are planned for various large-scale projects that are currently under progress.

In addition, cutting-edge methods like Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) are being investigated as potential solutions to release dormant reserves with little effect on the environment.
