GSECL NPCIL MoU marks Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited’s (GSECL) entry into the nuclear power sector. GSECL has signed an MoU with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) for a proposed nuclear power project at Dhuvaran in Gujarat. The project is expected to have a capacity of around 4,000 MW and could involve investment of nearly ₹1 lakh crore.
Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited (GSECL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) to explore the development of a proposed nuclear power project at Dhuvaran in Anand district.
The proposed project could add around 4,000 MW to Gujarat’s power generation capacity. It may involve a potential investment of nearly ₹1 lakh crore. The initiative marks GSECL’s first entry into nuclear power generation.
GSECL NPCIL MoU Sets Out Project Responsibilities
Under the GSECL NPCIL MoU, GSECL will assess land availability and supporting infrastructure for the proposed project. NPCIL will undertake site surveys and technical studies. It will also provide technical and expert assistance.
Further development will depend on the technical and economic feasibility of the project. The project will also require the necessary statutory clearances before moving to subsequent stages.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Gujarat Energy Minister Rushikesh Patel, senior officials of the Energy and Petrochemicals Department, GSECL Chairman Ashwini Kumar and NPCIL Chairman and Managing Director V. Rajesh.
4,000 MW Nuclear Project to Support Gujarat’s Power Capacity
The proposed Dhuvaran project could provide Gujarat with an additional 4,000 MW of generation capacity if it progresses through the required feasibility and approval stages.
The nuclear project is being considered alongside Gujarat’s growing renewable energy capacity. Nuclear generation can provide continuous electricity, while solar and wind generation depends on weather conditions. The proposed project could therefore form part of the state’s broader strategy to diversify its power generation portfolio.
Gujarat has been expanding its solar and wind capacity. The proposed nuclear capacity would add another source of large-scale generation to the state’s power system.
GSECL NPCIL MoU Supports Nuclear Energy Expansion
The agreement comes as India expands its nuclear power programme. NPCIL operates commercial nuclear reactors and is also developing additional projects across the country.
The proposed Dhuvaran project is subject to site assessment, technical and economic studies and statutory approvals. The MoU therefore provides a framework for evaluating the project rather than confirming final construction or commissioning.
The GSECL-NPCIL agreement marks a new area of activity for Gujarat’s state power utility. If feasibility studies and approvals are completed, the proposed 4,000 MW Dhuvaran nuclear project could become a major addition to the state’s long-term power generation capacity.
