Government Redevelops 60 Railway Stations Across Northeast Region

Indian Railways has reported significant progress in the northeastern region of India, with the redevelopment of 60 railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

Since 2014, the construction efforts have led to the laying of over 1,679 km of new tracks, with more than 2,500 route kilometres electrified, and the construction of over 470 road overbridges and underbridges. Notably, the Bairabi-Sairang line has fully connected Aizawl to the national rail network, marking a pivotal development for the region.

Ongoing major projects such as Sivok-Rangpo, Dimapur-Kohima, and Jiribam-Imphal continue to promote economic growth and social integration within the northeast. The ministry emphasizes that these infrastructure initiatives are vital to national integration and enhancing logistics.

Among the standout projects is the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramula Rail Link (USBRL), a 272-km high-cost endeavor connecting the Himalayan region, featuring the world’s highest railway arch bridge, the Chenab Rail Bridge, and India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge at Anji River. This complex includes 36 tunnels and 943 bridges, enhancing connectivity to the Kashmir Valley which is expected to boost tourism and economic activity.

Additionally, the New Pamban Railway Bridge in Tamil Nadu, distinguished as India’s first vertical-lift sea bridge, enhances rail connectivity to the important tourism hub of Rameswaram. It has been recognized with the Steel Structures & Metal Buildings Award 2024 for its engineering excellence.

Indian Railways is also advancing high-speed rail projects, notably the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Project, with substantial progress on the viaduct and pier works, aligning with the nation’s vision for modern transportation infrastructure.
