Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme has generated over Rs 1,36,300 crore for farmers from 2014-15 to October 2025, according to Minister Suresh Gopi.
This program has saved Rs 1,55,000 crore in foreign exchange, reduced CO2 emissions by approximately 790 lakh metric tonnes, and substituted over 260 lakh metric tonnes of crude oil.
Additionally, the country’s sugar production for the 2024-25 season exceeded demand, with 340 lakh metric tonnes available and 34 lakh metric tonnes diverted for ethanol.
This diversion has stabilized sugar inventories and ensured timely payments to farmers. Further, maize production increased by nearly 30% from 2021-22 to 2024-25.
The government has introduced the Pradhan Mantri JI-VAN Yojana to support second-generation ethanol production from non-food biomass and is encouraging the shift to more sustainable crops.
The “Roadmap for Ethanol Blending in India 2020-25” highlights advancements enabling zero liquid discharge distilleries, contributing to reduced pollution. Efforts to promote water conservation in sugarcane cultivation, including drip irrigation, are also underway.
