Eastern Railway is set to undergo a major transformation. The Eastern Railway expansion programme will bring an investment of around ₹12,000 crore over the next four to five years. The plan targets increased route capacity and a stronger rail network across the region.
Eastern Railway General Manager Gitika Pandey shared these details at the CII Rail Synergy & Bengal MSME Vendor Connect Summit 2026.
Eastern Railway Expansion to Fund 563 KM of New Lines
The investment breaks down into two key areas. Around ₹10,000 crore will go toward expanding 563 km of railway lines. Another ₹2,000 crore will fund 10 bypass projects.
Together, these upgrades aim to boost rail connectivity. They will also support smoother movement of goods and people across the region.
Stronger Rail Network to Support Logistics and Manufacturing
A bigger rail network means lower logistics costs. It also means better supply-chain efficiency for businesses operating in the region.
Manufacturers stand to benefit directly. Faster, more reliable movement of goods can sharpen their competitive edge in domestic and export markets.
Pandey called on MSMEs to step up too. She urged them to develop innovative products and cost-effective solutions, strengthening their role in the region’s economic growth.
MSME Payment Delays Take Centre Stage
The summit didn’t stop at railways. Delegates also addressed challenges facing micro, small and medium enterprises.
P K Das, Director, MSME DFO, Kolkata, briefed participants on the MSME Development (Amendment) Bill, 2026. Parliament recently passed this legislation. It aims to fix a long-standing problem: delayed payments to MSMEs.
Eastern Railway Expansion and MSME Support to Drive Regional Growth
The Eastern Railway expansion, paired with stronger MSME support, sets the stage for a more efficient logistics ecosystem. Together, these moves promise to open new opportunities for businesses and suppliers across the region.
