Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited has signed an MoU to develop a greenfield shipyard at Dugarajapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, with a planned investment of around ₹15,000 crore.
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries Park, Andhra Pradesh (NSHIP-AP), to develop the MDL Greenfield Shipyard at Dugarajapatnam.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. MDL Chairman and Managing Director Captain Jagmohan and NSHIP-AP Managing Director Praveen Adhithya C.V. signed the agreement.
MDL is a Navratna Defence Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Defence.
MDL Greenfield Shipyard: ₹15,000 Crore Investment
MDL plans to invest around ₹15,000 crore in the project over the next five to seven years. The investment will be subject to the required approvals and statutory clearances.
The proposed shipyard is expected to generate direct and indirect employment for around 45,000 people.
The facility will have a design capacity of 1.2 million gross tonnes per year. The shipyard can also be expanded in the future, based on requirements.
Shipbuilding Capacity at Dugarajapatnam
The proposed shipyard will manufacture a range of commercial vessels. These will include tankers, bulk carriers, container ships and LNG carriers.
The facility will also undertake construction of specialised vessels to meet different commercial and industrial requirements.
The project will add shipbuilding capacity in Andhra Pradesh and support the development of the state’s maritime infrastructure.
Dugarajapatnam Shipbuilding-cum-Port Cluster
The project is part of the proposed Dugarajapatnam Shipbuilding-cum-Port Cluster. The cluster is being developed under the Government of India’s Shipbuilding Development Scheme.
NSHIP-AP has identified MDL as the anchor shipyard for the development of the cluster.
The proposed project is expected to strengthen shipbuilding capabilities and create a larger industrial ecosystem around Dugarajapatnam.
