Climate Change Linked to Nearly 100,000 Deaths from 2023 Heatwaves: Global Study

Nearly 100,000 deaths in 2023’s unprecedented heatwaves were linked to human-induced climate change, according to a global study by Australian researchers.

The study estimated 178,486 excess deaths worldwide, with 54% (about 97,000) attributable to climate change. These heatwaves coincided with the hottest year on record, 1.45 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, significantly impacting subtropical and temperate zones, where extreme temperatures worsened health conditions.

The findings stress the urgent need for public health interventions and climate mitigation strategies to combat the anticipated rise in mortality due to global warming. Additionally, a government report warned that over one million Australian homes could be at risk due to rising sea levels if warming exceeds 3 degrees Celsius by 2050.
