As part of its BRICS Chairship in 2026, India hosted the 3rd BRICS Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Risk Reduction in New Delhi, further solidifying its position as a global leader in disaster risk reduction. In order to strengthen collaboration on climate resilience, sustainable development, and disaster preparedness, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) convened a meeting that included ministers and senior representatives from BRICS nations.
At the end of the summit, the member countries unanimously adopted the BRICS Joint Statement on Disaster Risk Reduction. This statement reaffirms the member nations’ commitment to implementing the BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Work Plan (2025–2028) as soon as possible. More international cooperation and the development of more resilient societies in the face of increasing climate and disaster threats are the stated goals of the declaration.
According to Nityanand Rai, India’s Minister of State for Home Affairs, the country’s disaster management strategy prioritises innovation, resilience, and sustainable development, drawing inspiration from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Ten-Point Agenda for Disaster Risk Reduction. Greater collaboration in early warning systems, robust infrastructure, science, and community readiness should be prioritised, he said, calling on all BRICS members to do just that.
Emphasising the significance of partnerships, creative funding, and emerging technologies in lowering catastrophe risks, a high-level policy dialogue centred around climate-smart and disaster-resilient infrastructure. In order to enhance institutional cooperation, capacity building, and information sharing, ministers also shared best practices.
As if that weren’t enough, India has launched six flagship knowledge products to help BRICS countries improve their disaster management capacities and make more evidence-based policy decisions. In order to make tangible progress in disaster resilience, member countries have also committed to maintaining technical exchanges, conducting simulation exercises, and working together on collaborative initiatives.
