By welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Australia and praising the two countries’ increasing collaboration in commerce, culture, education, and people-to-people links, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has reiterated Canberra’s dedication to expanding ties with India.
In his address to the Australian Parliament, Albanese highlighted India’s predicted rise to the position of world’s third-largest economy this decade, praising the country as a significant economic potential.
Shared interests and cultural ties, he added, are further deepening engagement between the two countries, and the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) has considerably enhanced bilateral trade.
Speaking about Australia’s strategic and economic alignment with India, Albanese remarked, “We are a Pacific nation, but we are also an Indian Ocean nation.” This highlights the region’s importance to Australia.
In reflecting on his 1991 first visit to India, Albanese lauded the country’s diversity and kindness and said it was an unforgettable experience. He went on to say that he is looking forward to hosting Prime Minister Narendra Modi again and that a visit to Australia is imminent.
The prime minister of Australia went on to commend the Indian-Australian community, calling them a driving force behind the country’s social and economic progress and the fastest-growing migrant group.
He made the point that the one million-strong Indian diaspora in Australia has been an asset to the country through its entrepreneurial energy, strong work ethic, and sense of community, and that it has also helped to bring the two countries closer together.
While rejecting efforts to sow discord and restating the significance of recognising multicultural contributions, Albanese stated that his administration would remain committed to supporting and standing by the interests of Indian-Australians.
In a similar vein, Philip Green, Australia’s high commissioner to India, expressed his anticipation of Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Australia and shared on social media Albanese’s comments.
