Assam Takes Flight: MoU Signed for Five New Greenfield Airports

The Assam government and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) have inked an MoU to conduct pre-feasibility studies on the potential construction of five new greenfield airports inside the state. Regional air connectivity, tourism, and long-term economic growth are the goals of this effort.

In Guwahati, prominent officials from the state administration and AAI came together to formalise the agreement. Before preparing comprehensive project reports, AAI is required by the MoU to assess the environmental, financial, and technical feasibility of the proposed airports. The chief minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, stressed that the plan’s primary goal is to build airports in strategically important and highly touristic areas. The goal of the effort is to promote economic growth by making formerly inaccessible areas more accessible, increasing tourism, and luring investors.

In a statement, the Chief Minister made it clear that the greenfield airports will improve connectivity inside the state. He went on to say that this would make travelling to picturesque and distant places easier and faster for everyone. Pre-feasibility studies will be carried out by AAI and will address topics such as runway planning, safety and navigation needs, environmental effects, anticipated passenger volume, and cost projections. The state government will use these results to move forward with comprehensive project reports and approval procedures.

When finished, these airports will reinforce infrastructure for important locations, facilitate emergency and disaster response, shorten travel times to Assam’s distant districts, and increase regional economic links. The project is a huge deal since it will improve investment, trade, and tourism while connecting the Northeast to the rest of the country’s aviation network.
