Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated development projects worth approximately Rs 6,500 crore in Darrang, Assam, marking a significant day in the state’s development. He extended greetings for Assam’s progress and the Janmashtami festival, expressing spiritual fulfillment from visiting the sacred land of Assam.

The Prime Minister referenced his “Sudarshana-Chakra” security strategy concept and highlighted Mangaldoi as a symbol of Assam’s identity. Modi emphasized the government’s commitment to preserving Assam’s cultural heritage and driving its rapid development, noting the state’s growing national and global impact through collective efforts.

The Prime Minister stated that India is the world’s fastest-growing country, with Assam being one of its fastest-growing states, achieving a growth rate of nearly 13 percent. He attributed this success to the people of Assam and the joint efforts of the Union and State governments, noting the consistent public support for Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his team, as evidenced by recent panchayat election results.

The government aims to make Assam a growth engine for India, with recent inaugurations of development projects totaling approximately ₹6,500 crore, including the Darrang Medical College and Hospital, highways, and ring roads, which are intended to make Assam a leading healthcare hub and one of the most connected states.

The Prime Minister emphasized that while post-independence development was concentrated in western and southern India, the current government is focused on uplifting eastern India and the North East, believing the latter part of the 21st century belongs to this region.

He highlighted the critical role of enhanced connectivity, including physical infrastructure (road, rail, air) and digital connectivity (5G, broadband), in facilitating development, improving convenience, supporting businesses, expanding tourism, and creating employment opportunities in the North East.

Prime Minister Modi emphasized Assam’s significant gains from national connectivity initiatives, contrasting the current government’s construction of six Brahmaputra bridges in a decade with the slow pace under previous regimes. He laid the foundation for the Kurua–Narengi bridge, which will drastically reduce travel time between Guwahati and Darrang, saving citizens time and money.

He also highlighted the forthcoming ring road, designed to ease urban traffic by bypassing the city and creating Assam’s inaugural seamless multi-modal connectivity network by linking five national highways, two state highways, an airport, three railway stations, and an inland water terminal.

Additionally, he announced upcoming GST rate reductions, effective from Navratri, which will lower the cost of everyday items, cement, expensive medicines for serious illnesses, insurance premiums, and new vehicles, benefiting all segments of society.

The Prime Minister urged citizens to prioritize indigenous products (“Made in India,” “vocal for local”) to bolster the nation. He detailed significant advancements in healthcare, stating that the number of medical colleges and seats has more than doubled since 2014, with a goal to add one lakh new medical seats in the next four to five years.

He strongly criticized the opposition for prioritizing its vote bank, aligning with anti-India elements, encouraging infiltration, and undermining national security by appearing to side with Pakistan. The Prime Minister invoked Assam’s patriotic history while denouncing the opposition’s actions, which he claimed enabled infiltrators and encroachments on public and tribal lands.

The Prime Minister announced that conditions leading to infiltration are being reversed by the new alliance government. He highlighted the reclamation of vast tracts of land in Assam, specifically in Darrang district, from infiltrators under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership.

The Gorukhuti area, previously under infiltrator control, is now the site of the Gorukhuti Agricultural Project, employing local youth as ‘Krishi Sainiks’ cultivating various crops. This reclaimed land is now an agricultural development hub.

The Prime Minister affirmed that the government will prevent infiltrators from seizing national resources and will not compromise the rights of farmers, youth, and tribal communities. He condemned atrocities by infiltrators against women and warned of demographic change conspiracies in border regions through infiltration, a threat to national security, leading to the launch of a nationwide Demography Mission. He pledged to protect the country from infiltrators and ensure their removal.

He stressed the importance of coordinated efforts to preserve Assam’s heritage and accelerate its development, reiterating the vision of transforming Assam and the North East into a driver of a developed India. Dignitaries present included Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
