AI-based weather forecasting: Govt sent monsoon forecasts to 3.8 crore farmers this year

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare (MoAFW) provided AI-based monsoon forecasts via SMS (m-Kisan) to approximately 3.8 crore farmers across 13 states, up to four weeks earlier than usual.

This targeted dissemination of AI weather forecasts, a first of its kind, aims to empower farmers for Kharif agricultural planning by providing critical insights into monsoon arrival and progression, including mid-season pauses.

This forecast was available earlier than ever before—up to four weeks ahead of the rain.

This is the first-of-its-kind targeted dissemination of AI weather forecasts to date, marking MoAFW as a world-leader in applying AI weather forecasting to directly benefit farmers.

The initiative was discussed with Nobel Laureate Michael Kremer, highlighting its role in helping farmers adapt to climate change-induced weather variability.
