Since its start in February 2019, the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) project has distributed over 4.46 lakh crore to qualified farmer families across India, making it one of the biggest Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) efforts in the world.
The most recent achievement was the distribution of around Rs 18,880 crore in direct financial aid to nearly 9.44 crore eligible farmers, including over 2.18 crore women beneficiaries, in Tarakeswar in the Hooghly district of West Bengal, as part of the 23rd installment of the PM-KISAN programme.
Guaranteed income support for landholding farmer families with cultivable land is the goal of PM-KISAN, a centrally supported plan. Through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, qualified farmers can get Rs 6,000 per year, split evenly into three installments of Rs 2,000 each.
In order to help small and marginal farmers cover the prices of agricultural inputs and keep farming activities going without relying too heavily on informal finance sources, the initiative has greatly improved their economic security, according to the official fact sheet.
Beneficiaries must initiate e-KYC verification, link their Aadhaar IDs to bank accounts, and seed their land records on the PM-KISAN portal to guarantee efficient delivery and transparency.
With Rs 60,000 crore set aside for the PM-KISAN initiative in the Union Budget 2026-27, the government has demonstrated its ongoing dedication to the welfare of farmers. With this distribution, the country’s financial safety nets will be bolstered, which will benefit millions of rural families.
The government emphasised that the strong digital infrastructure of PM-KISAN is the key to its success since it allows for the direct transmission of benefits without the need for middlemen. As an additional indicator of the scheme’s wide reach, over 23% of beneficiaries are women farmers, proving that it has encouraged financial inclusion.
The scheme’s coverage and accessibility have been enhanced through the implementation of other initiatives. An extensive network of over 5 lakh Common Service Centres (CSCs) has been established to streamline the process of e-KYC and farmer registration.
The scope of the program has been even further broadened by targeted enrolment campaigns. Over one crore farmers became eligible for PM-KISAN during the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra. The government’s 100-day program also enlisted more than 25 lakh farmers.
The main income support program was able to enrol almost 30 lakh more farmers in September 2024, thanks to a special campaign that cleared lingering self-registration cases.
The government’s goal to boost agricultural productivity, promote rural livelihoods, and ensure direct financial support to farmers efficiently continues to revolve around PM-KISAN, which is being expanded and digitally integrated.
