The principles of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, and Sabka Prayas have propelled India through an extraordinary transition in the past twelve years, thanks to the foresight of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
As a result of concerted policymaking and steady execution, India has transformed its environment over this time. The Namami Gange Programme has helped the nation increase its tree cover, revive its coastal ecosystems, wetlands, and mangroves, and revitalise its rivers. In 2014, the Namami Gange Programme was established with the goal of restoring the ecological health of the River Ganga and its tributaries by reducing pollution. We have approved 524 projects so far, with 355 of them finished as of February of this year.
In 2015, the Green India Mission was established as a central program to restore ecosystems and plant trees across the country. More than a quarter of India’s landmass is covered by forests and other vegetative cover (8.27 lakh square kilometre). In terms of overall forest area, India has surpassed all but nine countries, marking a major milestone in global forest statistics. Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam, the environmental movement started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2024, is now among the biggest in the world. Up till last December, more than 262 crore seedlings were planted.
In 2022, India took the lead in lifestyle-based climate action with the introduction of Mission LiFE, which boosted the country’s international reputation. The emission intensity reduction objective set by India for 2005 was met eleven years early, with a reduction of 33 to 35 percent. By establishing India as a world leader in climate action and the transition to sustainable energy, the International Solar Alliance, which was established in 2015, has greatly boosted India’s reputation abroad. India has taken a well-rounded strategy that incorporates preservation, sustainability, and development in response to the growing global challenges of climate change, resource scarcity, and environmental degradation.
