During their meeting on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his delight at Rabi Lamichhane’s desire to work closely with India to promote a shared and successful future for both countries. Rabi Lamichhane is the head of Nepal’s ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP).
The prime minister expressed his pleasure at meeting Mr. Rabi Lamichhane, chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party of Nepal, in an X post. I am delighted to hear that you are eager to collaborate closely for a bright future, and I couldn’t agree with him more. He continued by saying, “Our Neighbourhood First policy prioritises Nepal as a partner, and we are excited to work with the new administration to strengthen the unique and complex bond between our two nations.”
Meeting in person highlights New Delhi’s persistence in reaching out to Kathmandu as the two countries seek to strengthen cooperation in the areas of security, economics, and people-to-people relations. This is the latest in a string of meetings with the Nepalese delegation that is now in town.
Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, met with Lamichhane and his staff earlier in the day. According to a post on X by the Union Home Ministry, the Home Minister expressed India’s congratulations to the RSP on their election victory and best wishes for the incoming government’s prosperity. India and Nepal have a strong bond, and both countries are committed to strengthening it, according to the ministry.
Lamichhane expressed his satisfaction at meeting Shah and characterised the discussions as productive, with an emphasis on deepening relationships between Nepal and India, improving security cooperation, and encouraging more cooperation between the two countries to advance democratic principles and common interests.
The Nepalese team met with BJP leader Nitin Nabin as part of the ‘Know BJP’ project. Nabin spoke about the party’s organisational structure, strategy for public engagement, and the model of government put out by Prime Minister Modi. He emphasised the long history of friendship between the two countries, stating that it is founded on civilisational shared heritage, cultural affinity, and strong people-to-people links. Generation Z’s increasing clout in politics and its impact on civic engagement and political leadership were other topics of conversation.
There is a lot of economic reliance between India and Nepal, as well as strong cultural ties and an open border. Improving connection, increasing electricity commerce, and simplifying cross-border travel have been priorities for both nations in the past few years. This is for the benefit of their respective populations. The contacts on Tuesday indicate a new push to strengthen the collaboration, with a focus on working together practically and maintaining open lines of communication at all levels.
Officials from both countries have stated that they are ready to further up their engagement in the next months, with the prime minister repeating Nepal’s priority status under the Neighbourhood First strategy and the home minister highlighting collaborative security and people-centric projects. To turn the general political goal into tangible results, additional exchanges at the working level are anticipated.
The leadership of the RSP has made it clear that they are willing to work with New Delhi on issues such as security coordination, democratic institution-building, and youth involvement, all of which are areas of shared interest. India and Nepal have recently held a series of discussions with the goal of formally outlining a plan to strengthen their unique relationship.
