India expressed its delight on Tuesday at Germany’s decision to enable visa-free airport transit for Indian nationals, viewing it as a major milestone in the development of closer bilateral relations and improved connection between individuals.
With the new arrangement taking effect on June 3, Indian citizens will no longer need an airport transit visa to transit through German airports on their way to third countries.
The move is a result of talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Merz visited India in January 2026.
The MEA claims that the waiver will make travel easier for Indian passengers and will also help to strengthen economic, cultural, and social ties between the two countries.
The German Embassy in New Delhi made the announcement, noting that the elimination of the need for an airport transit visa was officially published in Germany’s Federal Law Gazette on June 2 and will go into effect on June 3.
Germany is determined to deepen its connections with India, promote greater mobility, and back the expanding economic cooperation between the two nations, according to the embassy.
Indian tourists, students, professionals, and business tycoons would likely reap the benefits of this change since they utilise German airports as stepping stones to other countries.
After a time of increased cooperation between the two countries in the areas of renewable energy, healthcare, technology, investment, and trade, the announcement comes as a surprise.
Noting that two-way trade hit a record high in 2024 and kept its positive momentum into 2025, both leaders expressed their delight at the steady rise in bilateral trade and investment during Chancellor Merz’s visit earlier this year.
In addition, Germany and India inked a slew of agreements pertaining to economic and strategic cooperation. The MEA reports that in an effort to strengthen cooperation in areas such as commerce, technology, and people-to-people interactions, the two nations have signed nineteen agreements and declared a number of policy initiatives.
With the expansion of economic and commercial links between the two nations, the visa-free transit option is anticipated to bolster business travel and connectivity even further.
