Google Warns of AI-Driven Cyberattacks by North Korean Hackers

Google, which is owned by Alphabet, has issued a warning about the “significant interest” that state-sponsored hackers from China and North Korea have shown in utilising AI to discover new cybersecurity flaws.

A number of hacker groups associated with China and North Korea have started using sophisticated AI-driven methods for finding vulnerabilities and exploiting them online, according to a research published on Tuesday by Google’s Threat Intelligence Group.

According to the study, the APT45 hacking organization, which is associated with North Korea, has been trying to automate the analysis of digital systems for possible security flaws by using AI systems to create thousands of repetitive prompts.

According to Google, these AI-enhanced techniques let cybercriminals repeatedly search for vulnerabilities that could be exploited on a large scale.

Google also made history when it revealed that attackers had used AI to find a zero-day vulnerability, an exploit that neither software developers nor security teams were aware of, and that they had attempted to exploit it for mass exploitation before it could be fixed.

In response, Google announced that its systems have effectively blocked criminal groups’ attempts at similar attacks by identifying and blocking harmful activities using AI capabilities.

The development highlights the increasing worries surrounding the weaponization of AI in cybersecurity, as both its offensive and defensive uses are developing at a rapid pace.

The news arrives soon after “Claude Mythos,” an AI model developed by American firm Anthropic with a focus on security and the ability to identify software flaws, was unveiled. At this time, the model is only available for controlled testing to a small group of defence and research partners and has not been made publicly available.

South Korean markets are not immune to the worldwide uncertainty caused by wider geopolitical tensions and the failure of US-Iran diplomatic talks.
