Norway’s Ambassador to India, May-Elin Stener, has described Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s forthcoming visit to Oslo as a “historic” moment, underscoring its importance in strengthening bilateral relations and widening cooperation between the two countries.
Ahead of the 3rd India–Nordic Summit, Stener highlighted that this will be the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Norway in 43 years, calling it a significant milestone that reflects the steadily growing partnership between India and Norway.
She pointed out that key discussion areas will include climate change, the transition to clean energy, and sustainable development. According to her, Norway is committed to supporting India’s goals for green growth, particularly as the country continues its rapid economic development.
The ambassador also indicated that broader geopolitical matters, including the ongoing situation in West Asia, are likely to be discussed during the meetings. She stressed the value of dialogue among countries that share similar views and support a rules-based global order.
During the visit, Prime Minister Modi is expected to meet King Harald V and Queen Sonja, and hold official bilateral discussions with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store. Both leaders will also participate in the India–Norway Business and Research Summit.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the visit will prioritise strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, clean and sustainable technologies, and the blue economy. It will also make use of existing cooperation mechanisms, including the India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement.
The 3rd India–Nordic Summit, scheduled to take place in Oslo on May 19, will include leaders from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and Sweden. The agenda will cover areas such as technology, renewable energy, defence collaboration, space exploration, sustainability initiatives, and Arctic cooperation, aiming to further enhance India’s engagement with the Nordic region.
Building on previous summits held in Stockholm in 2018 and Copenhagen in 2022, the upcoming meeting is expected to inject renewed momentum into trade, investment, and strategic relations between India and the Nordic countries.
