India Rolls Out First Barrier-Less Toll Collection System on NH-48 Highway

An important milestone in the digitisation of India’s highways was declared by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari with the launch of the country’s first barrier-less Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) toll system at Chorayasi Toll Plaza.

The system allows for toll collection without vehicles having to stop on the NH-48 corridor, which runs between Surat and Bharuch. It uses technologies like FASTag and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) to process payments while the vehicle is in motion.

Minimising human intervention in toll operations, the MLFF system is anticipated to greatly decrease travel time, alleviate congestion, enhance fuel efficiency, and decrease vehicular emissions, as stated by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

Aligning with worldwide best practices in highway management, the program is a major step toward updating India’s tolling infrastructure. In a statement, Gadkari said that barrier-less tolling will help the economy by making life easier for commuters and increasing logistics efficiency.

The launch follows the government’s recent initiative to switch to a computerised system for collecting tolls across the country. The National Highway toll plazas have been accepting digital modes of payment, such as FASTag and UPI, for all user fees from April 10.

With over 98% adoption of FASTags, the National Highways Authority of India has instructed issuing banks to verify the accuracy and smooth functioning of the system by validating car registration numbers associated with FASTags.

The nationwide rollout of the MLFF is just one part of the government’s larger effort to build a highway system that is efficient, tech-driven, and welcoming to commuters.
