According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Vietnamese President Nguyễn Phảc Lam has been invited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit India on May 5-7 for a state visit.
To Lam has only just taken office, thus this will be his first trip to India. There will be a heavy emphasis on economic engagement, as he is joined by a high-level group that includes ministers, senior government officials, and a business contingent.
After a formal welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan on May 6, the visiting leader will have in-depth bilateral talks with Prime Minister Modi. There will likely be extensive discussion of regional and global issues, as well as trade and investment, throughout the meetings.
Other senior leaders are anticipated to engage with the Vietnamese group, and President Droupadi Murmu will also have separate discussions with To Lam.
Bodh Gaya and Mumbai are on To Lam’s schedule, highlighting the cultural and economic aspects of his trip.
The Ministry claims that these engagements will provide the bilateral ties a much-needed boost and open up new possibilities for cooperation within the current Comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework.
After Lam’s victory, Prime Minister Modi thanked him and voiced his hope that the two countries’ longstanding partnership will only grow stronger.
During Modi’s 2016 visit to Vietnam, relations between the two countries were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, reflecting the profound historical and civilisational links between the two countries. Timed to coincide with the tenth anniversary of this landmark, the forthcoming visit will serve to further emphasise the deepening of economic and strategic ties between the two nations.
