The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) renewed chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s contract for another year, extending his tenure until June 2027.
Agarkar, who took over as chairman of the senior men’s selection committee in July 2023, has overseen a highly successful phase for Indian cricket. Under his leadership, India secured major ICC titles, including the T20 World Cups in 2024 and 2026, as well as the 2025 Champions Trophy—strengthening his position within the board.
Reports say the board seeks to demonstrate confidence in the current selection setup, especially ahead of key global tournaments. The renewal also ensures continuity as India prepares for upcoming international commitments, including the next ICC events cycle.
BCCI sources indicate that the move represents a contract renewal, not an extension, in line with selection committee tenure norms. Selectors typically serve up to four years on a committee, subject to performance and internal guidelines.
Agarkar’s tenure has been marked by a period of transition in Indian cricket, including the retirements of several senior players and the emergence of a new core group. His leadership has been credited with enabling a smooth generational shift while maintaining competitive consistency at the highest level.
With this renewal, Agarkar stands to become one of the longer-serving chief selectors in BCCI history, aligning with the board’s broader focus on stability and long-term planning in team selection.
