PNG Surge: 3.1 Lakh New Connections Activated in Just One Month

Amidst supply problems caused by the Iran War, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has sped up the installation of piped natural gas (PNG) connections in order to control fuel consumption.

With the goal of decreasing reliance on LPG, gasification was carried out on more over 3.1 lakh PNG connections in March, including both residential and commercial segments. An additional 2.7 lakh connections are expected to be added in the near future.

There have been no shortages at distributorships and daily deliveries of more over 50 lakh cylinders of LPG have been steady since March 1, despite problems with global supplies. In addition, the government has helped those in need by supplying 3.2 lakh 5 kg cylinders to migrant workers.

Essential sectors are still receiving priority allocation; PNG families and CNG transport are guaranteed 100% supply, while industrial and commercial users are receiving approximately 80% of their normal demand.

The government has increased domestic LPG production, kept crude inventories adequate, and run refineries at high capacity to guarantee a steady supply of fuel. Across the country, there are sufficient supplies of petrol and diesel, and all petrol stations are operating as usual.

Online LPG bookings have soared to 92%, while deliveries utilising Delivery Authentication Codes (DACs) have skyrocketed to 83%, all in an effort to improve transparency and curb diversion.

The allocation of commercial LPG supplies has been prioritised for critical industries like chemicals, steel, autos, and textiles, and has returned to 70% of pre-crisis levels. Financial incentives are being offered by city gas distribution corporations including Indraprastha Gas Limited, Mahanagar Gas Limited, GAIL Gas Limited, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited to hasten the adoption of PNG.

The federal government has long advocated for the switch from liquid petroleum gas (LPG) to propane natural gas (PNG) and has pushed for the expedited approval of projects to enhance municipal gas distribution networks.

Stable supply to fertiliser factories and further sourcing of LNG highlight efforts to preserve energy security and guarantee continuity across vital sectors.
