West Asia Tensions Mount: Govt Calls Urgent All-Party Meeting Today

Concerns over the economic and security consequences of the developing crisis in West Asia have prompted the Indian government to call an all-party meeting to update political leaders.

Under the leadership of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, the meeting is set to take place in the Parliament of India complex. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is scheduled to apprise leaders of recent developments and India’s diplomatic reaction.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to the current scenario as a “unprecedented crisis” that will have far-reaching consequences, prompting the move. The ongoing violence has caused disruptions to vital marine routes like the Strait of Hormuz, which has caused global oil markets to be volatile and has raised concerns about supply chains and inflation. It is now in its fourth week.

A thorough parliamentary debate has been requested by opposition parties, namely the Indian National Congress. Mallikarjun Kharge, the opposition leader in the Rajya Sabha, blasted the administration for choosing a briefing over a thorough discussion.

Similarly, Rahul Gandhi, the Lok Sabha’s leader of opposition, voiced his disapproval of India’s foreign policy stance, but he said he had other obligations and would not be able to make it to the meeting.

The move is a result of a security review that was convened by Rajnath Singh and attended by senior officials, including Samir V. Kamat, Chief of Defence Staff Anil Chauhan, and the heads of the three services.

With geopolitical tensions rising and their global impact becoming more profound, the all-party gathering is anticipated to play a pivotal role in establishing political agreement and moulding India’s approach to the issue.
