Green Energy Milestone: 2.5 Million Homes Go Solar Under PM Surya Ghar Scheme

As of March 5, 2026, the Rajya Sabha was informed that the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana had built 25 lakh rooftop solar systems.

Shripad Yesso Naik, the Minister of State for Power and New and Renewable Energy, reported that out of 63,26,125 applications received through the scheme’s national portal, 25,02,217 rooftop solar systems have been completed.

The rapid growth in the use of home solar systems has led to a substantial increase in government spending under the programme, with ₹14,585.29 crore utilised so far in FY26 (till March 5), compared to ₹7,822.92 crore in FY25.

The initiative is mostly demand-driven; it will launch in 2024 and allow residential consumers with grid-connected power connections to apply through the national site to install rooftop solar systems.

During the 25-year lifespan of the systems, the government predicts that 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity and 720 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions might be achieved by putting rooftop solar panels on one crore of residences.

Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, and Rajasthan will be the top five states in terms of adoption by the end of 2025.

As of December 31, 2025, India’s non-fossil fuel power generation capacity reached 266.78 GW, according to Naik’s separate response. Solar, wind, biofuel, and hydropower make up 258 GW of this capacity, whereas 8.78 GW comes from nuclear power.

Along these lines, the Indian government is pushing forward with the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to make the country a leading producer, consumer, and exporter of green hydrogen and related products.
