Various major infrastructure projects have been approved by Indian Railways to improve maintenance capacity, alleviate congestion on important corridors, and increase passenger and freight operations. These projects will be implemented across the Northern, Southern, and Eastern Railway zones.
At a cost of ₹174.26 crore, the Railways in Rajasthan authorised the construction of coach maintenance facilities at Shri Ganganagar Station for Phase-I. New washing, stabling, pit, wheel lathe and sick line sheds will be constructed as part of the project to accommodate modern rail stock, which will include Vande Bharat and LHB trains. Six more rakes per day should be added to the facility’s maintenance capabilities.
The Bikaner region’s Lalgarh coaching maintenance facilities have been approved for an upgrade project worth ₹139.68 crore under Phase-II. As the Vande Bharat fleet grows, this project will add new facilities to accommodate it, such as covered sheds, an enlarged sick line, automatic coach washing plants, synchronised coach lifting systems and EOT cranes.
At a cost of ₹450.59 crore, the Railways in Kerala have authorised the doubling of the 21.10-km Turavur-Mararikulam stretch under the Southern Railway. This segment will improve freight and passenger traffic, especially port-linked shipments to Cochin Port, and is located on the vital Ernakulam-Alappuzha-Kayankulam corridor.
