The upcoming EU-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is “historical” and the “mother of all deals,” according to Reuben Gauci, Malta’s High Commissioner to India.
He pointed out that New Delhi’s status as a “top priority” for the EU is highlighted by the impending arrival of European leaders, such as European Council chief Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, for Republic Day and the EU-India Summit.
With an emphasis on strengthening Malta’s trading relationship with India, which currently experiences a considerable trade imbalance favouring imports from India, Gauci emphasised the importance of the visit in furthering negotiations that started more than a year ago.
He underlined that the FTA might help close this gap and encourage more Maltese investment in India. Gauci discussed the intricacies of talks that cover a range of economic domains and provide distinct advantages to EU member states.
He emphasised that the FTA must be completed in order to stabilise trade conditions, particularly in view of rising US tariffs. He praised the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that the FTA would be a major accomplishment for India, enhancing its reputation internationally.
