Operational data shows that Indian Railways’ Trucks-on-Trains (ToT) service is becoming more and more popular in the industry and profitable.
The Ministry of Railways reports that during FY25 (April–December), the service handled 545 rakes, transporting more than three lakh tonnes of freight and earning 36.95 crore. Since its founding, ToT has generated over ₹131 crore, conducted over 1,955 trips, and moved over one million tonnes.
With very brief first- and last-mile road movements, the service combines the flexibility of roads with the effectiveness of electrified rail infrastructure on the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC), enabling loaded trucks to be transported on adapted flat waggons for the long run. By road, the New Palanpur–New Rewari route now takes roughly 12 hours instead of over 30.
Growing confidence in the approach is shown in the strong acceptance from industries like dairy, FMCG, automotive, and food processing. The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (Amul) is one of the main clients, and the June 2023 relaunch will help maintain consistent levels.
The ToT service, which runs on the fully electrified Western DFC, lowers pollution, reduces traffic, avoids highway tolls, and lowers logistical costs. As infrastructure development advances, Indian Railways intends to expand the service to more corridors.
