The “Draft National Electricity Policy (NEP) 2026,” which aims to modernise the power sector and improve its financial and environmental viability, was made available for public comment by the Indian government in January 2023.
By aiming for per capita power consumption of 2,000 kWh by 2030 and over 4,000 kWh by 2047, this plan aims to fulfil the goal of Viksit Bharat while adhering to climate commitments.
Promoting capacity expansion through Resource Adequacy plans, linking tariffs to indices for yearly adjustments, and exempting some industries from cross-subsidies to boost competitiveness are some of the main recommendations.
In order to reach 100 GW capacity by 2047, it stimulates the use of advanced nuclear technology, supports the development of renewable energy through market-based techniques, and highlights the need for a more robust dispute resolution process.
The overall goal of the draft is to offer dependable power at a reasonable cost, which represents a major advancement over the original strategy that was introduced in 2005.
