Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), in collaboration with Africa50, has entered into a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Project Agreement to develop crucial transmission infrastructure in Kenya, specifically the 400 kV Lessos–Loosuk and 220 kV Kisumu–Kakamega–Musaga systems, with a 30-year concession period.
The signing involved key figures from POWERGRID and senior Kenyan officials and represents Africa’s first Independent Transmission Project (ITP) along with POWERGRID’s initial international project-finance venture in Africa.
The initiative aims to enhance Kenya’s national grid, improve system reliability, and support the transport of power from renewable energy sources to significant load centres.
This PPP framework underscores confidence in private sector involvement in Africa’s power transmission and highlights Africa50’s regional expertise combined with POWERGRID’s extensive technical capabilities. POWERGRID, operational in over 25 countries, has proven successful in delivering power transmission solutions, and its partnership with Africa50 showcases its role as a reliable global partner.
As of December 15, 2025, POWERGRID operates 287 substations and over 181,894 circuit kilometers of transmission lines, maintaining a high transmission system availability of over 99.84% through advanced technological tools and automation.
