India’s Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) has dispatched its sixth 3300 Horse Power AC–AC diesel-electric locomotive to Mozambique, highlighting the nation’s growing global capabilities in locomotive manufacturing.
This dispatch is part of a contract for ten locomotives, which BLW is executing through RITES. The first two were sent in June 2025, followed by others in September, October, and December, with the sixth dispatched on December 16.
The locomotives, capable of speeds up to 100 kmph, feature modern amenities such as refrigerators and a user-friendly cab design, enhancing operational efficiency and comfort for drivers. BLW, a state-run enterprise located in Varanasi, is strengthening its role as an export hub for advanced railway technology, aligning with India’s “Make in India” initiative.
Since 2014, the company has exported trains to several countries, including Sri Lanka and Myanmar, aiding in their railway systems’ development. The exports of various rolling stock and critical railway equipment to numerous countries, such as those in Europe and Africa, further solidify India’s position as a reliable exporter in the global railway market.
