India’s solar capacity is projected to reach approximately 216 GW by FY28, generating 305 billion units, driven by the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and significant efficiency gains.
As of September 2025, the installed solar base surged to 127.3 GW, contributing about 25.7% of the total capacity.
Exports of solar photovoltaic products have increased over tenfold from FY19 to FY25, primarily to the US. Government initiatives have expanded domestic solar module capacity to 100 GW, with expectations of an additional 100 GWp by FY28.
Domestic cell manufacturing capacity is projected to reach 100 GWp with significant capital investment.
India may need 36-47 crore solar panels to meet its solar capacity target, and exports are anticipated to be a key growth driver, though risks like reliance on Chinese supply chains and systemic constraints persist.
