India’s ₹2.3 Lakh Crore Travel Economy Is Just Getting Started: Shekhawat

India’s tourism industry is rapidly emerging as a key economic driver, with a record of Rs 2.3 lakh crore in foreign exchange earnings in 2023 and ranking 8th in global tourism rankings.

The country is turning its temples, towns, festivals, and landscapes into revenue generators, with mega-events like Maha Kumbh 2025, digital tie-ups with global platforms like Netflix, and a strategic domestic push through campaigns like ‘Dekho Apna Desh’.

The plan is to place India among the world’s top four tourism economies within the next decade, focusing on infrastructure upgrades, brand partnerships, and heritage revival.

India’s Ministry of Tourism (MoT) is collaborating with Netflix to promote Indian destinations, focusing on films and series that can drive tourism. The “Dekho Apna Desh” campaign encourages Indians to explore their own country, while the Ministry is improving connectivity, infrastructure, and amenities through Swadesh Darshan 2.0 and upgrading the top 50 tourist destinations in partnership with states.

The country is also backing homestays through Mudra loans, investing in guide training, and cutting GST on hotel tariffs to make travel more affordable.

India’s tourism potential is being compared to the US, France, and the US, with the US earning the most from tourism and France leading in arrivals. India can learn from these countries by investing in world-class infrastructure, strong branding, and diversified experiences.
