GAIL Mangalore Petrochemicals Limited (GMPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of GAIL (India) Limited, has commissioned its 1.25 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) manufacturing plant at the Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) in Karnataka. The commissioning marks a significant milestone in GAIL’s strategy to expand its presence in the downstream petrochemical sector and strengthen India’s domestic petrochemical manufacturing capabilities.
GMPL Revives PTA Manufacturing Facility
The plant was originally established by JBF Petrochemicals Limited (JBPL), which subsequently underwent the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP). In 2023, GAIL acquired the company through the insolvency resolution process under a Resolution Plan approved by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). Following the acquisition, GAIL undertook an extensive revival and refurbishment programme involving significant engineering, technological and operational challenges to restore the facility. The successful commissioning reflects the sustained efforts of the GMPL team, technology partners, consultants, contractors and other stakeholders, supported by GAIL’s management.
PTA Plant to Strengthen Domestic Manufacturing
Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) is a critical raw material used in manufacturing polyester fibre, polyester yarn, PET resin and several other polyester-based products. These materials are widely used in the textile, apparel and packaging industries.
With an installed capacity of 1.25 million tonnes annually, the Mangalore facility is expected to make a significant contribution to India’s domestic PTA manufacturing capacity. Increased domestic availability of PTA could help reduce dependence on imports, strengthen supply chains and support the expansion of India’s downstream polyester industry.
GAIL to Market PTA Under G-Tex Brand
The plant also enjoys a strategic location near New Mangalore Port, supported by dedicated logistics infrastructure for the efficient movement of raw materials and finished products. This connectivity is expected to provide operational and logistical advantages to the facility.
GAIL will market the manufactured PTA under its brand name G-Tex, leveraging its established marketing network and customer reach. The commissioning marks an important step in GAIL’s petrochemical growth journey and the revival of a major industrial asset for productive use.
The commissioning of GMPL’s 1.25 MTPA PTA plant strengthens GAIL’s downstream petrochemical portfolio and adds significant domestic manufacturing capacity, supporting India’s efforts to build a more self-reliant polyester and petrochemical industry.
