Cybersecurity Risks: NSE Flags Quantum Threats

Cybersecurity has become a growing priority for India’s capital markets as artificial intelligence (AI) creates new risks for financial systems. National Stock Exchange (NSE) Managing Director and CEO Ashish Kumar Chauhan has urged stockbrokers to strengthen their security measures and prepare for emerging threats. Speaking at the ANMI International Capital Market Convention 2026 on Saturday, he said the NSE was reviewing its network components to identify vulnerabilities to AI-driven cyberattacks.

NSE Calls for Stronger Cybersecurity Across Capital Markets

Chauhan warned that weaknesses at individual brokerage firms could expose the wider trading network to security risks. He stressed that every stockbroker must treat cybersecurity as a core operational responsibility to protect trading systems and maintain market integrity.

He also called on the Association of National Exchanges Members of India (ANMI) to establish a special task force. The proposed team would identify vulnerabilities, coordinate responses and help market participants strengthen their preparedness.

The NSE is ready to support brokers through workshops and other initiatives. Chauhan said the exchange would also work with the regulator to improve cybersecurity readiness across the market.

AI-Driven Attacks Raise Cybersecurity Concerns

Chauhan urged stockbrokers with limited in-house technical expertise to build their capabilities or seek support from external cybersecurity advisers. He highlighted the growing sophistication of AI-enabled attacks and the risks they pose to interconnected financial systems.

As trading infrastructure becomes increasingly technology-dependent, security gaps at one market participant could affect others. Regular assessments, stronger technical controls and coordinated responses will therefore remain important to protecting trading operations.

Quantum Computing Poses Longer-Term Risks

Beyond AI-driven attacks, Chauhan flagged quantum computing as a potential long-term challenge. Advances in this technology could weaken some existing cryptographic systems used to protect sensitive information and secure communications.

His remarks come amid wider concerns about digital security in India’s financial sector. The supplied report cites an alleged exposure of 3,897 State Bank of India customer records on the dark web. It also refers to warnings from Punjab National Bank about AI-enabled fraud involving voice cloning, deepfakes and phishing.

Strengthening Cybersecurity Preparedness

Chauhan’s remarks highlight the need for a coordinated approach to cybersecurity across India’s capital markets. Stronger technical capabilities, regular vulnerability assessments and information sharing can help market participants identify risks and improve their response to emerging threats.

With AI-driven attacks evolving and quantum computing presenting potential future challenges, cybersecurity preparedness will remain important to protecting trading infrastructure and maintaining confidence in the financial system.
