Green Hydrogen Production in India is set to receive a boost as the Centre has awarded 30 Kilo Tonnes Per Annum (KTPA) of production capacity to four oil refineries. The projects will come up across four regions under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM). The move aims to strengthen domestic clean energy production and reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels.
Green Hydrogen Production capacity awarded under NGHM
The government has awarded the capacity under the SIGHT (Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition) Mode 2B scheme of the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The allocation covers Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited and Numaligarh Refineries Limited.
The National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to make India a global hub for the production, use and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives. Therefore, the latest allocation supports India’s wider clean energy goals.
Four refineries to receive new capacity
Indian Oil Corporation’s Panipat refinery has received 10 KTPA of green hydrogen production capacity. Bharat Petroleum Corporation’s Bina refinery and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation’s Vizag refinery will each receive 5 KTPA.
Meanwhile, Numaligarh Refineries has received the remaining 10 KTPA capacity at its Numaligarh refinery. Together, the four projects will add 30 KTPA of production capacity.
Private developers to implement projects
The projects will follow the BOO (Build Own Operate) model. Private developers will implement the projects and make project-specific investments.
The government expects domestic green hydrogen production and use to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels. It could also strengthen energy security. In addition, the projects will support India’s clean energy transition and net-zero goals.
India targets 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030
Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik shared the details in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
India aims to establish green hydrogen production capacity of 5 million metric tonnes per annum by 2030. So far, the government has awarded 7,56,100 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green hydrogen production capacity to 16 companies.
Green ammonia supply also gets a boost
The government has also signed Green Ammonia Sale and Purchase Agreements. These agreements cover the production and supply of 6,70,000 MTPA of green ammonia to 11 fertiliser units across India.
Green ammonia is a derivative of green hydrogen. Its wider use could help support the country’s efforts to develop a domestic clean energy ecosystem.
Electrolyser manufacturing capacity expands
The government has also awarded 3,000 MW per annum of electrolyser manufacturing capacity to 15 companies under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
The expansion of electrolyser manufacturing can support the growth of India’s green hydrogen industry. At the same time, it can help build domestic capabilities for clean hydrogen production and strengthen the country’s energy transition.
