India has expanded the entry network for foreign travellers holding an India e-Visa, with 11 more international ports now authorised to handle their arrival. The latest expansion includes nine land ports and two airports. As a result, the total number of designated international ports for e-Visa holders has increased to 88.
The move is expected to make travel to India more convenient for eligible international visitors. It also widens the choice of entry points for tourists, business travellers and other foreign nationals who are eligible for an e-Visa.
India e-Visa entry points increase to 88
With the latest additions, India now has 37 airports, 38 seaports and 13 land ports where foreign nationals holding an e-Visa can enter the country.
The two newly added airports are Bhopal and Tirupati. The nine new land ports are Agartala, Darranga, Gede, Ghojadanga, Haridaspur, Jaigaon, Dawki, Moreh and Attari (Road).
The expansion is particularly relevant for travellers entering India through land borders. It also strengthens connectivity for visitors travelling to regions that may not be served by the country’s major international airports.
E-Visa facility available to nationals of 172 countries
India introduced the e-Visa facility in 2014 for nationals of 43 countries. Since then, the programme has expanded significantly. The facility is now available to nationals of 172 countries, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The India e-Visa facility currently covers several categories. These include tourist, business, medical, student, transit and other eligible visa categories. A Group Visitor Visa for cruise travellers is also included under the e-Visa framework.
The government said the electronic visa system has also helped simplify the visa process. Around 95% of e-Visa applications are processed in less than 72 hours, while roughly 78% of visas issued by India are now electronic visas.
Focus on easier international travel
The latest expansion forms part of India’s broader effort to simplify and streamline its visa regime. At the same time, the government is seeking to strengthen technological infrastructure for immigration and border management.
For international travellers, the wider network of e-Visa entry points can provide greater flexibility while planning trips to India. This can be particularly useful for visitors arriving through land borders or travelling directly to destinations away from the country’s major aviation hubs.
The move could also support India’s inbound tourism and international travel ecosystem. More accessible entry points can help improve connectivity for leisure travellers, business visitors and cruise passengers.
According to the government, the expansion is aimed at facilitating legitimate foreign travel while maintaining appropriate security measures.
