Indian Railways has introduced an AI-based stain detection pilot project at mechanised laundries in the Pune Division of Central Railway and the Jaipur and Jodhpur divisions of North Western Railway. The initiative is designed to improve the quality of washed linen supplied to passengers travelling in AC coaches by using automated camera-based inspection technology.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, responding to a question in the Rajya Sabha, said the national transporter follows strict standards to provide clean and hygienic linen on every journey. Linen items are regularly inspected and replaced after reaching the prescribed service life under Railway norms.
Each AC bedroll includes two bed sheets, one pillow cover and one hand towel. One sheet is used on the berth, while the second acts as a protective layer beneath the blanket to improve hygiene. The blanket cover sheet is washed after every single use to maintain cleanliness.
To further improve passenger comfort, blanket cover sheets are being provided to all AC passengers on trains operated by the North Western Railway and on the newly introduced Vande Bharat Sleeper service between Kamakhya and Howrah. According to the Railway Ministry, the initiative has received positive feedback from passengers.
The Railways also uses Whito-Meters to verify linen cleanliness in mechanised laundries, while CCTV cameras monitor laundry operations. In addition, CCTV surveillance has been installed at 3,215 railway stations and 13,409 passenger coaches to strengthen passenger safety and improve security across the railway network.
The AI-powered stain detection pilot reflects Indian Railways’ focus on combining technology, hygiene and passenger comfort, while modernising railway services through intelligent quality monitoring.
