As part of the Lokayan 2026 transoceanic expedition, the Indian Naval Sail Training Ship (STS) INS Sudarshini visited New York and returned, strengthening the maritime cooperation between India and the United States while highlighting India’s rich nautical history. This trip was a part of the Indian Navy’s ten-month world deployment, during which they hoped to foster international understanding, cultural understanding, and maritime diplomacy.
An important aspect of the tour was for INS Sudarshini to take part in the 250th anniversary festivities of the United States’ independence, which included the International Naval Review 250 and SAIL 4th 250. Proudly flying the Indian National Flag alongside naval boats and tall ships from around the world, the indigenously built three-masted barque sailed past the Statue of Liberty and along the Hudson River during the stunning Parade of Sail.
While docked in Brooklyn, the Indian National Ship Sudarshini welcomed more than a thousand guests, including locals, maritime enthusiasts, and members of the Indian diaspora. Highlighting India’s long-standing naval heritage, visitors experienced the country’s rich nautical traditions and obtained insights into the Indian Navy’s sail training programs.
Among the notable guests that were welcomed by the ship were Parvathaneni Harish, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, and Binaya Srikanta Pradhan, Consul General of India in New York. They spoke with the crew and expressed gratitude for the ship’s efforts to foster cultural understanding, maritime cooperation, and stronger human connections between the US and India. At a state dinner on board, high-ranking diplomats, military officials, and invited guests reaffirmed the United States’ and India’s commitment to a comprehensive global strategic partnership.
The INS Sudarshini left New York for Boston after finishing its obligations there. It will be a part of the Sail Boston 2026 festivities. The ship is still cruising the high seas, spreading the Indian Navy’s message of friendship, marine cooperation, goodwill, and global participation as part of its Lokayan 2026 mission.
